The middle school years are critical times for students, who must attain valuable skills to determine a future path of academic success and growth, and to ensure success on the eighth grade standardized tests. By strengthening communication, perceptual and intellectual proficiencies, the Rhode Island Write on Sports program provides a set of skills that can be applied to academic areas beyond sports writing.
The stories are published in a booklet. Following the same process, students also will create a three-minute video. In addition, the camps feature mock interviews with Rhode Island journalists and sports figures as well as a field trip. Over the years, students have visited Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, to interview members of the New England Revolution professional soccer team and received a behind-the-scenes tour of McCoy Stadium, the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox.
